Cowboys Earn Dramatic Win Against East Carolina
March 02, 2009 | Cowboy Baseball
GREENVILLE, N.C. Â Doug Kroll's two-out, two-RBI double highlighted a three-run, eighth-inning rally by Oklahoma State to lift the 11th-ranked Cowboys to a 7-6 win over East Carolina at the Keith LeClair Classic Friday.
All-American Andrew Oliver won his seventh-straight decision on the mound for the Cowboys, while freshman Randy McCurry picked up his second save by getting Drew Schieber to foul out to right field with two runners on base to end the game.
Kroll and Neil Medchill led the OSU offense from the middle of the order as they combined for four hits and five RBIs.
With the win, OSU improved to 6-1 on the season and handed 23rd-ranked ECU its first loss as the Pirates fell to 5-1.
OSU struck first via the long ball in the top of the first as Medchill followed a walk to Kevin David with a two-run home run to right-center field. The blast was Medchill's second homer of the season.
The Cowboys' lead lasted until the third when ECU knotted the score with a two-run homer of its own, this one off the bat of Ryan Wood.
But the score did not remain tied long as Medchill's power surge continued. The junior sent a towering shot over the wall in right field for his second homer of the game to make the score 3-2. The Cowboys would add another run when ECU catcher Zach Wright failed to field a throw from the outfield, which allowed Kroll to score from second on a single by Tyrone Hambly.
OSU's 4-2 lead held until the seventh, but in that inning, the Pirates rallied for four runs. After the first two ECU hitters reached via a single and a walk, Oliver recorded the first out on a foul out.
Following the first out, another walk loaded the bases. Up next, Stephen Batts sent a grounder to Cowboy shortstop Tom Belza, who tossed the ball to second base for the second out. But Batts was called safe at first on the attempted ending-inning double play, bringing home a run and extending the inning.
And ECU took advantage as Brandon Henderson sent a shot over the right-center field wall just out of the reach of Cowboy center fielder Dusty Harvard for a three-run homer that gave the Pirates a 6-4 lead.
The Cowboys would answer in the top of the eighth. Eric Walker led off the inning with his first-career home run, a blast to right field that drove ECU starter Seth Maness from the mound.
Trailing by a run, OSU continued its rally and regained the lead. Harvard followed Walker's homer with a single, and after a pair of outs, ECU intentionally walked Neil Medchill. Following a wild pitch that put the Cowboy runners on second and third, Kroll made the home team pay with a double down the left field line that put the Pokes on top, 7-6.
ECU threatened to regain the lead in each of the final two innings, but both times McCurry got out of the inning by stranding a pair of Pirates on the base paths.
Oliver picked up the win to improve to 2-0 on the season. The junior southpaw struck out seven in seven innings while allowing five runs on six hits.
McCurry worked two scoreless innings, striking out two and allowing two hits.
OSU is scheduled to conclude its appearance in the LeClair Classic with a Sunday contest against St. John's scheduled for 9 a.m. (CST).
