Five Cowboy Wrestlers Advance At NCAA Championships

ST. LOUIS – The morning session at the 2009 NCAA Wrestling Championships came to a close with five of Oklahoma State's nine wrestlers advancing to the second round of the championship bracket.
Cowboy freshman 141-pounder Jamal Parks was a 6-4 winner in sudden victory over No. 19 Vincent Ramirez of North Carolina, with OSU 157-pounder Neil Erisman an 8-3 winner over Justin Gaethje of Northern Colorado. Cowboy 174-pounder Newly McSpadden claimed a 3-0 win over Ohio State's Dave Rella and OSU 197-pounder Clayton Foster dumped Iowa's Chad Beatty by an 8-5 decision. Heavyweight Jared Rosholt rounded out the first-round action with an 8-3 winner over Oregon State's Clayton Jack.
The two most challenging matches of the first round were the first two bouts of the day, as OSU 125-pounder Obenson Blanc lost a 4-2 decision to top-seeded and former NCAA champion Paul Donahoe of Edinboro and Cowboy 133-pounder Chris Notte lost a 5-4 decision to fourth-seeded Daniel Dennis of Iowa. OSU 165-pounder Brandon Mason was upset in the first round by Penn State's Dan Vallimont in sudden victory, 8-6. Making his first career NCAA Championships appearance, 184-pounder Chris McNeil lost a 3-1 decision in sudden victory to Thomas Spellman of Virginia.
