Cowboys Finish Second At Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship

LAS VEGAS, Nev. ÂOklahoma State's men's golf team was unable to maintain its lead on the final day of action at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship on Sunday, finishing one shot behind UNLV and alone in second place.
Behind the strength of an 18-under 270 during its second round, the Cowboys built a 12-shot lead heading into their final round. However, OSU was only able to get one player under par on Sunday en route to its 7-over 295 score. The Cowboys' 8-under tournament total of 856 came in one shot behind the Rebels' 855 tally.
UNLV put together the day's best round with a 282 and was one of just two teams to break par on the day at the par-72, 7,510-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club. Georgia carded a 5-under 283 to close out play in third place at 870.
Freshman Morgan Hoffmann, who entered the day with a three-shot lead after matching the school's 18-hole scoring record on Saturday with a 62, finished with a 76 to slip into a tie for second place. Hoffmann matched Southern California's Matthew Giles with a 210 total to share the runner-up spot.
Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale ran away from the field, closing with a 68 and a 205 total on his way to medalist honors.
Senior Trent Leon was the lone Cowboy to finish under par on the day, signing for a 1-under 71 to tie for sixth place at 214. The Dallas, Texas native started his day with eight consecutive pars before ending his front nine with a birdie. Leon fell back to even par with a bogey on his 10th hole, but quickly rebounded with a birdie at the 11th. After a bogey at the 17th, he closed with a birdie at the 18th to get back to 1-under.
Redshirt freshman Bernhard Neumann closed out his first start for the Cowboys with a 79 to finish in a tie for 29th place at 222.
The sophomore duo of Rickie Fowler and Kevin Tway were among the group tied for 29th place at 8-over 224. Fowler finished with a 73, while Tway wrapped up play with a 75.
OSU will be back in action on March 21 when it begins play at the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga.
