Cowboys Drop 5-4 Contest To Rhode Island
March 16, 2009 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â A pair of unearned runs and 15 runners left on base proved too costly for Oklahoma State to overcome Sunday as the 11th-ranked Cowboys suffered a 5-4 loss to Rhode Island at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With the loss, which was OSU's second at home this season, the Cowboys fell to 13-4, while URI improved to 8-5.
The Cowboys fell behind in the top of the first. With two outs and a runner on second, OSU right fielder Doug Kroll dropped a fly ball that allowed URI's first run to score. The Rams then took advantage of the error by adding another run on an RBI double by Rob DeVeney.
OSU cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the second when Tyrone Hambly homered to left field. The solo shot was Hambly's fourth of the season and made the score 2-1.
In the fourth, URI added to its lead. After OSU starter Thomas Keeling struck out the first two Rams, Mike LeBel walked. Up next, Dan Haverstick sent a shot into the left-center field gap, where center fielder Micheal Dabbs made a diving attempt at the catch but couldn't come up with it. On shortstop Tom Belza's relay throw to the plate, Eric Walker appeared to have the plate blocked, but LeBel slid in and was ruled safe to give the Rams a 3-1 lead.
URI tacked on two more runs in the fifth as Zoey Angulo homered over the wall in left field to put the Rams up, 5-1.
The Cowboys battled back with two runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Davis Duren and an RBI single by Kevin David but still trailed by two heading into their final at bat.
Kroll drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the ninth, and after Neil Medchill popped out, pinch runner Dusty Harvard advanced to second on a passed ball. Following a walk to Hambly, pinch hitter Randy McCurry flied out to right field for the second out of the inning.
With OSU down to its final out, Dean Green stepped to the plate and delivered a single through the right side that scored Harvard to make the score 5-4 and put Cowboys on first and third.
But the Cowboys would strand the tying and winning runs on base when Dabbs struck out to end the game.
Gardner Leaver picked up his first win of the season in relief for the Rams, while Luke Demko earned his third save.
Keeling suffered the loss for the Cowboys to fall to 1-1. The sophomore southpaw struck out eight in five innings of work while allowing five runs, just three of them earned, on six hits.
Brad Propst came out of the OSU bullpen and kept the Rams off the scoreboard over the final four innings as the sophomore allowed just two hits and struck out four.
Dabbs, David, Belza and Hambly each collected two hits for the Cowboys.
OSU returns to action Wednesday with a doubleheader against Western Illinois. The first game is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
