Cowboy Golf In Sixth Place At Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship

LAS VEGAS, Nev. ÂOklahoma State's men's golf team opened play at the Southern Highlands Collegiate on Friday with a 3-over par 291 to end the day in sixth place at Southern Highlands Golf Club.
Clemson claimed the top spot in the team race, posting a 5-under 283 to finish two shots ahead of tournament host UNLV. Arizona also broke par during its first round with a 1-under 287 total to stand in third place.
Sophomore Rickie Fowler was the lone Cowboy to finish under par at the par-72, 7,510-yard layout, finishing with a 71. The Murrieta, Calif., native will begin play on Saturday tied for eighth. Fowler recorded three birdies on his front nine to turn at 2-under par. After a bogey at the 10th, he added his fourth birdie of the day at the 11th before playing 1-over the rest of the way.
Fowler will begin play tomorrow four shots behind a quartet of players that all fired 67s.
Freshman Morgan Hoffmann turned in an even-par performance, finishing with a 72 and tied 13th place.
Making his first start for the team, redshirt freshman Bernhard Neumann carded a 74, putting him in the group of players tied for 23rd place. Joining Neumann at 2-over for the day was senior Trent Leon.
Sophomore Kevin Tway posted a 79 and finished tied for 63rd place.
The Cowboys will resume play tomorrow at 9:45 a.m. (PST) and will be paired with Georgia Tech and Florida.
