OKLAHOMA CITYÂOklahoma State's women's basketball team overcame a slow offensive start on Thursday to earn a 63-57 win over Texas Tech in the first round of the Big 12 Championship in front of 4,166 fans inside the Cox Convention Center.
The 10th-seeded Cowgirls (16-14 overall, 4-12 Big 12) snapped a five-game losing streak with the win and advanced to a quarterfinal matchup against No. 2 seed Baylor on Friday at 5 p.m.
OSU missed its first 13 shots from the field and shot just 23 percent in the first half as the Lady Raiders (16-15, 6-10) jumped out to a 15-0 lead to start the game. The Cowgirls finally got on the board nearly eight minutes into the contest and used a 9-0 run to get back into the game.
Tech pushed the margin back into double figures down the stretch and took a 28-17 lead into the half.
The second half proved a different story for OSU offensively, as the Cowgirls shot a sizzling 59 percent and quickly erased the double-digit deficit. Senior Taylor Hardeman hit four 3-pointers in the first five minutes of the half to put OSU in front for the first time of the night and the Cowgirls pushed the lead to as many as nine on three separate occasions.
After starting 2-of-11 from the free throw line, OSU made six of its last eight to secure the victory.
Shaunte' Smith recorded her 19th career double-double with a team-high 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Andrea Riley added 16 points and eight assists.
Hardeman finished the contest with 12 points, all of which came on a 4-of-9 performance beyond the arc.
