Gundy, Cowboys Unveil 2009 Signing Class
STILLWATER Â Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy announced on Wednesday the signing of 23 student-athletes to national letters of intent to join the Cowboy program. The class includes 19 high school prospects and four from the junior college ranks. Five members of the class, the four junior-college transfers and one high school student-athlete, are already attending school at OSU and will be on the practice field when OSU begins spring drills on March 9.
Some of the most decorated members of the incoming class are from the state of Oklahoma, where OSU picked up seven signatures. It is the biggest group of locals signed by the Cowboys since 2003, when Oklahoma State also had seven in-state signatures. “We are excited about the large number of Oklahomans,” Gundy said. “They are a talented and well-coached group, and we will benefit from having them in the program. They all come from successful high school programs and know how to win. We felt this was an exceptional year in Oklahoma.”
In perhaps a statement of OSU's expanding recruiting base, the new Cowboys are from eight different states. Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and Virginia are all represented in the class. Oklahoma State inked three Georgians in 2009 after signing three from that state last year. “Oklahoma and Texas will always be very important in our recruiting efforts,” Gundy said. “However, our success on the field has opened some doors for us in parts of the country where Oklahoma State might not have had a presence in the past.”
The class breakdown by position includes four defensive backs, five defensive linemen, four offensive linemen, three linebackers, three running backs, three receivers and a quarterback. The Cowboys signed four players who earned All-America honors, including three Oklahomans. The in-state All-Americans include defensive back Daytawion Lowe of Carl Albert, running back Jeremy Smith of Union and offensive lineman Brandon Webb of Owasso. The other All-American is running back Dexter Pratt of Navasota, Tex., who is already attending class at OSU.
