STILLWATER, Okla. - Former Oklahoma State golfers Rickie Fowler and Pernilla Lindberg earned status on the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour, respectively, through each tour's qualifying school on Monday.
Fowler finished with a six-round total of 421, 11-under, at the PGA Tour's Qualifying Tournament at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., to grab one of the coveted 25 qualifying spots. The Murrieta, Calif., native, who turned pro this summer after spending two seasons in Stillwater, fired a 2-under 70 during his final round to finish tied for 15th place.
After opening with a 74, Fowler used rounds of 68 and 66 to move up the leaderboard in the 152-player field. After posting a 73 during his fourth round, Fowler closed with consecutive 70s to earn his card.
In just three PGA starts, Fowler nearly bypassed the qualifying tournament after earning more than $570,000. After a seventh-place finish in his PGA debut at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals Open in October, Fowler lost in a playoff at the Frys.com Open the next week. He tied for 40th in his most recent start at the Children's Miracle Network Classic last month.
Fowler played five PGA Tour events as an amateur, making two cuts.
Former Cowboy Casey Wittenberg tied for 48th in the event with a 4-under 428 total.
Former Cowgirls Pernilla Lindberg and Christi Cano were among the 106 players in the field at the LPGA's Final Qualifying Tournament at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Lindberg, who joined the professional ranks following a third-place finish at the NCAA Championship last year, finished inside the top 20 to earn her playing card next year on the LPGA Tour. The Bollnäs, Sweden native carded a 1-over 73 during her final round to finish tied for 16th place with a five-round total of 359, 1-under par.
After opening play with consecutive 73s, Lindberg fired rounds of 71 and 69 to move into the top 10 before her final round 73 sewed up her card.
After turning pro this summer, Lindberg played in 10 events on the Duramed Futures Tour, finishing 11th on the money list. She made the cut in all 10 starts, finishing in the top five on five occasions and earning a runner-up finish at the impact Classic in August.
Cano tied for the 20th spot with an even-par total of 360, but lost in a three-hole playoff to Il Hee Lee. Cano made par on all three holes, while Lee made birdie at the last to claim the final place among the top 20.
