Palo Alto, Calif. -- James Anderson scored a game-high 28 points and Oklahoma State held off a late Stanford rally as the Cowboys defeated the Cardinal 71-70 here late Saturday night in the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series.
The game went back and forth for the first 10 minutes of the game before OSU went on a 6-0 run and took a 24-16 lead at the midway mark of the first half. The Cowboys extended the lead to 12 with 4-1/2 minutes left before intermission when Anderson made an and-one. However, the Cardinal went on a 9-2 run to finish the half and trailed by just five at 35-30 at intermission.
Oklahoma State extended the lead and appeared to have run away with the game when the Pokes led by 15 at 51-36 with 13:43 left in the game. The advantage was still in double digits with 5:35 left when OSU was ahead 67-56. Stanford outscored the Cowboys 12-2 over the five minutes, including six straight by Andrew Zimmermann to trim the lead to one with 37 seconds remaining.
After a pair of free throws by freshman guard Ray Penn made the score 71-68 OSU, Anderson was called for a foul on Landry Fields. One of the top-10 scorers in the country, Fields had scored just 10 points when he was called for his fourth foul at the 12:58 mark, but score a team-high 22 with 12 rebounds. Landry made both shots from the charity stripe and the Cardinal trailed by just one once again.
Zimmermann was forced to foul Keiton Page, but the sophomore guard missed the front end of a one-and-one and Zimmermann grabbed the rebound. After a timeout to draw up the final play, Stanford went to Zimmermann, who forced a shot over Marshall Moses at the buzzer and Matt Pilgrim snagged the rebound as time expired.
Oklahoma State is now 9-1 and will play La Salle on Monday, Dec. 21, at the Sonic All-College Classic at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
