TUCSON, Ariz. - Oklahoma State's 2010 baseball recruiting class has been ranked 17th nationally by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
Head coach Frank Anderson and his staff signed 18 players in the class. Nine of those are freshmen, while nine were signed from the junior college ranks.
Among the newcomers, eight are pitchers, five are outfielders and five are listed as infielders.
"We're excited about all the new kids, and it gives us a very good young stable of guys for the next two to three years," Anderson said. "It's a very comparable class to the one we signed in 2007 with guys like (Andrew) Oliver and (Tyler) Lyons."
Three of the freshmen could have an immediate impact during the upcoming 2010 season.
Left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney earned All-State honors at Putnam City High School last season after going 7-2 on the mound with a 1.32 ERA and 114 strikeouts and was a 24th-round selection of the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft.
Kevin Chambers is a player who could see time at first base and on the mound. The southpaw from Mission Viejo, Calif., starred at Capistrano Valley High School where he hit .320 and drove in 20 runs and was 8-3 with a 2.20 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 68 innings pitched. Chambers was also a 2009 MLB Draft pick as he was taken in the 47th round by Detroit.
Dane Phillips is a talented player who will spend time behind the plate at catcher. The Nacogdoches, Texas native was a first-team All-District catcher for three seasons and was the District MVP as a senior after hitting .670 with 16 home runs and 33 stolen bases. A two-time All-State pick, he also earned All-America honors from Max Prep and Louisville Slugger.
The Cowboys went the junior college route to sign outfielder Nicholas Rosthenhausler, who starred for two seasons at South Mountain JC in Phoenix. As a sophomore, he hit .429 with six homers and led the conference in hits. He was chosen in the 50th round of the '09 MLB Draft by Detroit.
