SAN MARTIN, Calif. - Oklahoma State's men's golf team began play at the Gifford Collegiate Championship at CordeValle with an opening round of 352 to stand in a tie for second place at CordeValle Resort.
Duke paced the field on Day One with a 10-under 350 total at the par-72, 7,169-yard layout. OSU and Lamar came in two shots back at 8-under for the day. The tournament format is slightly altered from most events with teams using six, not five, players and counting the low five scores instead of four.
UCLA's Pedro Figueiredo and Augusta State's Taylor Floyd each fired 67s to stand one shot clear of a pack of players that included Peter Uihlein and Trent Whitekiller. The Cowboy duo finished the day tied for third place after carding 4-under 68s.
Starting on the back nine, Uihlein went out in 5-under 31 with a side that included three birdies and an eagle. The sophomore's inward nine included a pair of bogeys and his fourth birdie of the round.
Whitekiller also made three birdies on his initial nine and turned at 2-under 34. The senior added three more coming in to get to his number.
One stroke back of his teammates was junior Kevin Tway, who posted a 3-under 69 to finish in a tie for ninth.
Sophomore Morgan Hoffmann also came in under par with a 2-under 70 and is tied for 12th.
Junior Mark Johnson's 77 tied him for 70th, while redshirt freshman Sean Einhaus posted a 78 and is tied for 77th place.
Redshirt freshman Drew Page saw his first action as a collegian on Monday. Competing as an individual, Page carded a 74 and is tied for 50th place.
The Cowboys will begin their second round tomorrow at 9:15 a.m. (PST) and will be paired with UCLA.
