Ten Cowboys Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

IRVING, Texas – Ten Oklahoma State Cowboys were named to the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 Conference Football Team, it was announced today by the league office.
Highlighting the list of OSU honorees is senior offensive lineman Andrew Lewis, who earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team accolades for the second-straight year. Lewis is studying for his Master's Degree in Health Care Administration.
Lewis is one of six Cowboys on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Joining him on the list is fellow senior Mark Chestnut, along with junior Shane Jarka, sophomore Victor Johnson and freshmen Lane Taylor and Brodrick Brown.
OSU's six first-team honorees are the most for the program since having eight first teamers in 2006.
Earning second-team honors for the Cowboys were juniors Kendall Hunter and Chris Donaldson, sophomore Jamie Blatnick and freshman Cooper Bassett.
Lewis is not the only Cowboy to repeat as an Academic All-Big 12 performer as both Blatnick and Jarka earned the honor for the second consecutive year.
The Big 12 named 169 student-athletes to the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 Football Team. Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and its media relations offices, the football academic all-league squad consists of 101 first-team members and 68 players on the second team.
To earn first-team honors, a student-athlete must have recorded a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second-team members are those with GPA of 3.00 to 3.19. Student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher, either cumulative or in the two previous semesters, and have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
