STILLWATER, Okla. -
Oklahoma State's men's golf team added three players during the fall signing period it was announced today by head coach Mike McGraw.
Oklahoma natives Ian Davis and Talor Gooch were joined by Florida product Patrick Winther as players to cast their lot with the Cowboys.
A native of Edmond, Okla., Davis broke current Cowboy Kevin Tway's scoring record with rounds of 64 and 66 to win the OJGT event at Lincoln Park in Oklahoma City this past August. He also closed with a 67 to win the OGA event at Oak Tree CC in Edmond this summer. Competing for Deer Creek High School, Davis won both the regional and conference tournaments in 2009 before finishing as the runner-up at the Class 5A state tournament.
“Ian has not had the chance to play much at the national level, but he did not let that deter him. He has won a lot in the state and that got my attention,” McGraw said.
A standout at Carl Albert High School, Gooch won the Class 5A state title in 2008 and claimed medalist honors in four of his eight high school events as a junior. Gooch was named a second-team AJGA All-American as a sophomore after winning the Aldila Junior at Oak Tree and posting four other top 10s throughout the year. In four years of AJGA competition, Gooch has posted nine top-10 finishes.
“I have been watching Talor since just after his seventh-grade year,” McGraw said. “I like the way he has progressed in every aspect of his game, both mentally and physically. When it was his turn to step up on a national stage he took advantage of it.”
Winther earned first-team AJGA All-American honors in 2009 after winning the HP Boys Championship and posting top 10s at the Mizuno Junior at Innisbrook and the Ping Invitational in Stillwater. A resident of Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla., Winther won the AJGA Cliffs Championship and the Polo Golf Junior Classic in 2008.
“Patrick was highly recruited and I feel lucky to get him because he had a lot of places to choose when it came to picking a school,” McGraw said.
