Oklahoma State-Missouri Post-Game Quotes
Oct. 17, 2009 – Boone Pickens Stadium
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy
On the game
“It was a tremendous team effort. It was a very interesting game in that we couldn't really slow them down in the first half, and offensively we moved the ball effectively. Then you get to the second half, and we give up 75 or 80 yards total in the second half and offensively, we kind of sputtered around.”
On stops on fourth down
“We had a number of fourth downs, and I think we stopped them three times in the fourth quarter. We got really key plays from our defense on short -third downs. I told the team it's been a long time in watching and being involved in Oklahoma State football as a coach and a player that we had that many crucial stops in big situations. We were really proud of our defense.”
On the win
“It's a very good win for us, and we've just got to keep moving forward. It's week-to-week in college football. We've got to prepare and get the guys ready to go play again.”
On Hubert Anyiam
“Hubert's done a nice job for us stepping in for Dez (Bryant). We learned a good lesson in the fact that you never know what a young man will do when he's presented the opportunity. When you have players that aren't available to you on a Saturday, it's an opportunity for another player to step up and make some plays. We've had a number of guys do that in the last three or four weeks. I'm very pleased with how some of the guys have stepped up and made some plays.”
Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Bill Young
On the game
“We won. That is fantastic. That's a very good football team. You've got to give them a lot of credit. They did a lot of great things. It was a wonderful win for us.”
On second half
“We made a few adjustments. The biggest thing was getting lined up. Missouri did a great job of coming in with some things we had not seen. They lined up in some unbalanced sets we had not seen, especially at the goal line where they ended up getting a touchdown. I think they ran a similar set later in the game on fourth down, and we ended up stopping them. That was one of the corrections that was made. Players just got into the groove of the game and started playing well.”
Oklahoma State cornerback Perrish Cox
On leadership
“It comes down to the seniors. We have to make sure our young guys keep their heads up and keep flying around. Our offense stepped up, special teams is always going to be there, but our defense has to step up.”
On second-half shutout
“That was one of the best things that we did in the second half. In the first half, we were not tackling and wrapping up. We were letting it get away from us. We went in and made a few adjustments. That is all we talked about, just making tackles.”
Oklahoma State safety Lucien Antoine
On turnovers
“They were pretty big. Our mindset coming into the game was to be more physical and tackle better. We did miss a couple of tackles. Our goal was to stop them, be more physical and get turnovers. At half time, the coaches told us to keep our composure and play ball and then we would come up with a lot of turnovers.”
On second-half adjustments
“Our coaches called the right plays all game. In the second half, they just told us to keep our composure. The coaches had a great plan. They called the right plays, we ran to the ball and we made some plays.”
Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel
Opening Statement
“First of all, I thought Oklahoma State played a really good football game. It was almost error free. I always tell my football team, 'In order to win you have to learn how to not beat yourself and do things that put yourself in a negative situation.' Four turnovers to zero – you're not going to win very many games there. Oklahoma State played very, very well. I was very impressed with how they played. We battled. We even had that reverse to get us in good field position to have a chance to score and go for a two-point conversion and try to maybe get back in the game. I thought we fought hard but just a lot a lot of mistakes today. You've got to overcome them, and we're not good enough to overcome them.”
On the game
“I thought we prepared well. I'm not blaming that in any way on that focus. We did not look like a well- coached football team, bottom line, and I'm responsible for that. Well-coached football teams don't make a lot of mistakes, and we did.”
On the rest of the season and Missouri's next game against Texas
“You just go back to work and get going again. One of the top teams in the country is going to come in, and we've got a chance to play them at our place and that's great. There's a lot left. We've got half the football season left. We've got to quit making mistakes to give ourselves a chance to win. I'm not devaluing in any way what Oklahoma State did. They did everything good enough to win.”
On if Danario Alexander's performance surprised him
“Not at all. He's a Jeremy Maclin, big-play-type guy. He's just been hurt and hasn't played as much. He can change a football game. He really can.”
On Missouri's offense
“It's just obvious. If you look at us all year on offense, you haven't seen us, except for our first football game, consistent. We've been very inconsistent on offense, and I also think you give their defense credit too. This isn't all just us making mistakes. I thought they did a lot of good things.”
Missouri defensive back Carl Gettis
On how deflating the end of the second quarter was when OSU scored
“I guess you could say it was a blow for us. That's how the game goes, when the other team gets some big plays, you've got to learn how to regroup as a team and come back strong.”
On the field position in the second half
“They did a good job of keeping us away from their side of the field. They had all the field position for most of the third quarter.”
On if they need to get the team going quick
“There's definitely a sense of urgency. We've got a big game coming up against Texas next week so we've got to have a good week of practice to get ready to play them.”
Missouri linebacker Sean Weatherspoon
On if there's a sense of urgency now
“Definitely after you drop two in a row. We came down in a hostile environment and started fast but didn't do the things we needed to do for the rest of the game. We've got a chance to get things together. We've got a big game coming up for Homecoming against Texas. It's a big opportunity.”
On the amount of opportunities the past two games not taken
“That's the most frustrating part because we know how good we can be, we just haven't put it together the past two weeks. We're gonna try to focus tomorrow in practice and flush it out and focus on Texas because that's a very big task. We saw what they did today, and they have a very good football team. We definitely feel we need to get it going in the right direction.”
Missouri wide receiver Danario Alexander
On having a career night
“That means nothing. It's all about the win. It doesn't matter if I get catches, we just need to get the win.”
On how frustrating it's been losing games with all the opportunities they've had
“It's very frustrating, but we know we can play. We've got great players on our team, and we just have to capitalize and stop making big mistakes. We've got to jump back and play good against Texas this coming week.”
