HAMPTON, Va. - Pins from Brandon Mason at 165 pounds, Newly McSpadden at 174 pounds and Jared Rosholt at 285 points led the Oklahoma State wrestling team to a 44-0 win over Clarion in the first round of the Virginia Duals today. The Cowboys will wrestle Navy at 2 p.m. Central in today's second round. Navy was a 20-15 winner over Virginia.
Chris Notte and Luke Silver added major decision victories for the Cowboys (9-2 overall) over Clarion.
Perhaps the biggest story of the dual was McSpadden, who moved up two weight classes from 157 pounds to 174 pounds for the first time in his career and responded by pinning Scott Joseph at the 5:32 mark of the bout. Prior to the pin, McSpadden took Joseph down twice in the bout.
Oklahoma State 157-pounder Neil Erisman picked up the most impressive win of the dual, toppling No. 18 Hadley Harrison by a comfortable 6-1 margin. Erisman took Harrison down early in the first period and slapped a hard ride on him until the clock read zeroes. Erisman started the second period on bottom and escaped for the only scoring of the stanza. Harrison's lone point came with an escape to start the third period, but Erisman took him down a second time and rode him out for the remainder of the bout to add a riding time point and claim his second consecutive win over a ranked opponent.
