Cowboy Wrestling Wins Two At Virginia Duals
January 09, 2009 | Cowboy Wrestling
HAMPTON, Va. Â The No. 13 Oklahoma State wrestling team picked up a pair of dominating wins on the first day of the Virginia Duals, claiming a 44-0 win over Clarion and a 34-3 victory over Navy at the Hampton Coliseum Friday. With a pair of pins over Clarion's Dominic Ross and Navy's Jason Coyne, Cowboy senior Brandon Mason became the 32nd OSU wrestler to hit the 100-win mark for his career.
With OSU's two wins Friday, the Cowboys improved to 10-2 overall on the year and are now set to face No. 12 Central Michigan in the semifinal round at 1 p.m. Central time tomorrow. Central Michigan beat Liberty and No. 23 Old Dominion Friday. The other semifinal matchup pits No. 8 Lehigh against No. 15 Edinboro. The Central Michigan dual will be carried live on 93.7 KSPI radio, with the second dual carried live at 7:30 p.m. on 105-5 KGFY-FM in Stillwater. Live audio from both duals will also be available on okstate.com.
The Cowboys won 19 of their 20 individual bouts Friday, and were dominant in how they won those matches, adding bonus points in nine of those victories.
Moving up two weight classes from his customary spot at 157 pounds to 174 pounds, Newly McSpadden was one of the stories of the day for Oklahoma State, as the senior from Vinita pinned Clarion's Scott Joseph in 5:32, then came back to beat No. 16 Luke Rebertus of Navy, 3-2. In the bout against Rebertus, the Midshipman started things off by getting the first takedown of the bout, but McSpadden escaped to cap the first-period scoring. McSpadden began the second period in the down position and escaped quickly to tie the score at 2-2. The third period began with Rebertus in the down position. Known as a solid rider at 157 pounds, McSpadden saw those skills translate at 174 pounds, as he put a suffocating ride on Rebertus for the duration of the period to claim the riding time point that ended up being the difference in the bout.
“Newly is a big 157-pounder and maybe it was a relief for him to not have to get down to that weight again,” Coach John Smith said. “Some people will wonder why we didn't just move Brandon Mason up to 174 and put Newly at 165, but I believe that Brandon is a 165-pounder and that is the right weight class for him, and with Newly being as big and strong as he is, 174 is a good weight class for him.”
With McSpadden at 174 pounds, sophomore Neil Erisman was impressive at 157 pounds, claiming a 6-1 win over No. 18 Hadley Harrison of Clarion and an 8-3 win over Joel Ahern of Navy. Against Harrison, Erisman scored a takedown early in the first period and slapped a hard ride on him until the clock read zeroes. Erisman started the second period on bottom and escaped for the only scoring of the stanza. Harrison's lone point came with an escape to start the third period, but Erisman took him down a second time and rode him out for the remainder of the bout to add a riding time point and claim his second consecutive win over a ranked opponent.
Cowboy heavyweight Jared Rosholt was overpowering in both of his bouts, pinning Clarion's Roman Husam in 4:01 and pinning Navy's Tyler Moyer in 1:30, but no Cowboy was more dominant than Mason Friday.
In his first bout against Clarion's Ross, Mason scored a quick takedown, then turned Ross to his back for three separate three-point nearfalls in the first minute of the bout. He locked in a half-nelson to turn Ross to his back a fourth time before flattening him completely to get the fall just 1:08 in.
After getting taken down by Navy's Jason Coyne early in the first period of his second bout, Mason was able to escape, then shot right back in for a takedown and turned it into a five-point move with a three-point nearfall before getting Coyne flat on his back for the pin at the 1:57 mark. Mason's win over Coyne marked the 100th win of his career.
Looking ahead to Saturday, Oklahoma State has not faced Central Michigan since 1998, when the Cowboys won the only previous head-to-head matchup with the Chippewas, 31-7. Lehigh claimed an 18-13 win over the Pokes at the Northeast Duals earlier this season and Edinboro has never taken the mat against Oklahoma State.
