Eleven Cowgirls Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

IRVING, Texas  Oklahoma State had 11 players named to the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 Conference Soccer Team, including 10 first-team honorees, it was announced by the league office today.
Earning first-team Academic All-Big 12 honors for the Cowgirls were seniors Jessica Jarrell, Jamie Markaverich, Yolanda Odenyo and Erin Stigler; juniors Kasey Langdon, Bridget Miller and Andrea Sartin; and sophomores Annika Niemeier, Katie Richardson and Whitney Wernimont. Junior Siera Strawser was named to the second team.
Markaverich highlights OSU's list of Academic All-Big 12 honorees as 2008 marks the fourth time she has been a first-team selection. Jarrell, Odenyo and Stigler were named to the first-team for the third time in their careers.
Both Miller and Langdon are two-time, first-team academic all-conference performers, while Strawser made the second team for the second-straight year.
Niemeier, Richardson, Sartin and Wernimont each earned Academic All-Big 12 accolades for the first time in their careers.
“It's a testament to the hard work of Agatha Adams and the rest of our academic services staff, as well as the dedication our players have towards succeeding in the classroom,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “We've had really high numbers of our players get (Academic All-Big 12) the last several years, and it's something we stress and take a lot of pride in.”
The Big 12 Conference named 94 student-athletes to the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 squad.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the soccer academic all- league squad consisted of 79 first team members combined with 15 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
