STILLWATER, Okla. Â Soccer Buzz Magazine release its award winners for the 2008 season today, and several Oklahoma State players were honored by the online publication.
Senior midfielder Yolanda Odenyo reaped several honors from Soccer Buzz. She was named a first-team All-American and All-Central Region performer and was also one of 16 finalists for the 2008 Player of the Year Award, marking the second consecutive year she was a Player of the Year Award finalist.
The 2008 honors marked the third time Odenyo was named an All-American by Soccer Buzz. She was a first-team selection in 2006 and 2008, and a second-team honoree in 2007. It also marked her fourth time to garner All-Central Region accolades and her third to earn first-team All-Region honors.
Odenyo had a record-setting season for the Cowgirls in 2008. She led the Big 12 Conference with 16 goals and 37 points, both of which set OSU single-season records, and was named the 2008 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-Big 12 performer for the third consecutive year. She finished her career as the Cowgirls' all-time leader in goals and points.
Joining Odenyo on the All-Central Region first team were juniors Kasey Langdon and Bridget Miller.
A forward from Wylie, Texas, Langdon earned All-Central Region honors for the first time from Soccer Buzz. In 2008, she racked up 36 points with 11 goals and 14 assists to earn first-team All-Big 12 honors. Her 14 assists were tops in the conference and tied for fifth nationally. Her 14 assists was also the second-highest single-season total in OSU history.
Also a native of Wylie, Texas, Miller earned Soccer Buzz All-Central Region honors for the second time. Miller started all 23 games at defender in 2008 and recorded a pair of assists. She led a defensive unit that allowed just 18 goals and recorded 10 shutouts on the season.
Earning a spot on the All-Central Region third team was junior Siera Strawser. The Big 12 leader in shots, Strawser finished second in the league with 13 goals to go along with seven assists. A second-team All-Central Region pick by Soccer Buzz a year ago, Strawser had a pair of three-goal games in 2008 and was a second-team All-Big 12 honoree.
With a stellar start to her collegiate career, defender Melinda Mercado was honored by Soccer Buzz as a third-team Freshman All-American and was also named to the All-Freshman Central Region team. Mercado started all 23 games for the Cowgirls and notched a pair of goals, including a game winner against nationally ranked Louisville.
Forward Kyndall Treadwell, who recorded 21 points with eight goals and five assists in 2008, joined Mercado the All-Freshman Central Region team.
Also earning accolades from Soccer Buzz was OSU head coach Colin Carmichael, who was named the Central Region Coach of the Year for the second time in his career. He also earned the honor in 2006.
In his fourth season as the Cowgirls' head coach, Carmichael led OSU to a record-breaking season and was named the 2008 Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year as the Cowgirls captured their first-ever Big 12 Conference regular season championship and set a program record with 18 wins.
OSU finished the season with an 18-1-4 mark and earned a berth in the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship for the third consecutive season. The Cowgirls were awarded one of 16 national seeds in the tourney and advanced to the second round for the third-straight season.
