Two Cowboy Wrestlers Win Titles At Roger Denker Open
January 18, 2009 | Cowboy Wrestling
WARRENSBURG, Mo. Â The Oklahoma State wrestling team sent nine competitors to the Roger Denker Open at the University of Central Missouri Saturday and six of those wrestlers placed at the event, led by 133-pound champion Jordan Oliver and 174-pound champion Kyle Griffin.
Other strong performers for the Cowboys were 184-pound runner-up Chris McNeil and Elliott Hellwege, who placed third at 197 pounds. 125-pounder Andre Taylor took fifth in his bracket, with 197-pounder Tyson Yoder finishing fifth in his weight class.
For Oliver, his performance at the Roger Denker Open resulted in his third open title of his redshirt season, as he also won the Missouri Open and the Oklahoma Open earlier in the year. The Easton, Pa., native dominated his first two opponents Saturday, beating Missouri's Luke Cherep by a 23-7 technical fall in his first bout before scoring a 12-3 major decision victory over Missouri's Taylor Crane in his second bout. Oliver met Oklahoma's David Armstrong in the final round and claimed a 2-0 decision to earn the title.
Griffin was dominant from the beginning at 174 pounds, pinning Central Missouri's Dan McGee in 1:42 in his first bout before pinning Oklahoma's Ben Bridell in a mere 55 seconds in his second bout. In the title bout, Griffin scored a 15-6 major decision victory over Northern Colorado's Ray Hall. His championship at the Roger Denker Open marked his second open tournament title of the season, as he won the Central Missouri Open in November.
The Cowboy varsity squad takes on No. 1 Iowa tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
