Weekly Coach's Update: Rene Sepulveda
September 08, 2008 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
On how practice is going:
“It's going well. We're in that phase where it's just a lot of mileage and girls are sore. We're doing a lot of hill training, a lot of mileage and drills; all kinds of stuff. We don't have any major competitions until October, so this is the time of year to put in the mileage and put in the work. Our first meet where we try to put a team together and really race will be the Cowboy Jamboree.”
On how much the girls run each week:
“It averages between 40 and 90 miles per week. It all depends on what they came out of high school at. We've got some girls that ran maybe 20 or 30 miles in high school so I can't move them up this early. If I was to give them 70 per week, they'd get injured. The high school girls are slowly getting their mileage up a little bit. It just depends on their level.”
On who has grabbed his attention so far this season:
“Leah Schroeder has improved a lot from last year. Tone (Hjalmarsen) and Mihaela (
On the freshman class:
“The freshmen have made a big impact already. There's a lot of talent in that group. They've made a really big impact because they're such hard working girls. They've made a really good transition to all the harder work they have to do at the college level.”
