September 29, 2008 | Cowboy Golf
TOLEDO, Ohio. Â Oklahoma State's men's golf team posted a 282 on Sunday to open play at the Ping/Golfweek Preview in first place at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
With their 2-under tally, the Cowboys were the only team to break par on the day at the par-71, 7,255-yard layout. Tennessee came in at level par with a 284, while Southern California stands in third place with a 286.
The Trojans' Jamie Lovemark fired a 66 to take the individual lead and will begin play tomorrow two strokes ahead of a trio of players that includes OSU sophomore Rickie Fowler.
Fowler began his round with seven consecutive pars before stringing together three birdies in a row to get to 3-under through 10 holes. The Murrieta, Calif., native's only blemish on his card was a bogey at the 14th. However, Fowler closed with a birdie at the par-4 18th to record a 68 and move into a tie for second.
Making his Cowboy debut, freshman Morgan Hoffmann got off to a quick start with birdies on four of his first five holes. The Saddle Brook, N.J., native posted two more birdies at Nos. 11 and 12 to get to 5-under before finding trouble on Nos. 16 and 17. Despite the double bogey-bogey stretch, Hoffmann signed for a 69 and will begin play on Monday tied for fifth place.
Senior Trent Leon also found his way into the top 10 with a 70. The Dallas, Texas native got off to a hot start as well with birdies on his first two holes and posted a third at the ninth to turn at 2-under 35. Leon recorded eight pars to go along with a bogey to get finish at 1-under.
Making his first start of the season, junior Trent Whitekiller carded a 75 and is tied for 34th place, while sophomore Kevin Tway is tied for 56th place after turning in a 77.
The Cowboys will resume play at 10:40 a.m. on Monday and will be paired with Tennessee and USC.
