LOUISVILLE, Ky. Behind a strong performance from former Oklahoma State standout Hunter Mahan, the United States recaptured the Ryder Cup, defeating the European Team, 16.5-11.5, on Sunday at Valhalla Golf Club.
The victory was the first for the American squad since 1999 and was its largest margin of victory since 1981 in the biennial event.
On Sunday, Mahan lost the first hole in his match against Paul Casey, but bounced back to take a 2-up lead after winning Nos. 2, 4 and 5. The two alternated wins on Nos. 7 and 8 before Casey cut the lead to one with his victory at the ninth.
After Casey squared the match with a birdie on No. 12, Mahan answered with a win at the 13th. Casey once again squared the match with a birdie at the 16th before Mahan rolled in a long birdie putt to claim the 17th. Casey drew even with a birdie on the closing hole to halve the match.
One of six rookies on the U.S. squad, Mahan finished as the team's leading point winner after posting a 2-0-3 record after halving his match against Paul Casey on Sunday. He was one of only two Americans, joining Phil Mickelson, to play all five rounds in the event and finished with 3.5 points.
He also finished as the only player to compete in all five matches without losing.
