Cowboy Golf Finishes Third At Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill.ÂOklahoma State's men's golf team posted a 292 team score on Sunday during the final round of the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational to finish in third place.
The second-ranked Cowboys, who entered as the event's defending champion, led the field by one stroke heading into the final 18 holes, but dropped down the leaderboard with their 12-over score. Illinois fired a 279 during its final round to move up and overtake the top spot. The tournament host finished at 12-over 852, while Indiana came in at 863 and was followed by OSU at 864.
A pair of players moved up the leaderboard to tie for individual honors as Illinois' Zach Barlow and Indiana's Alex Martin tied for medalist honors at 1-under 217. Barlow entered the final round tied for seventh before firing a 3-under 67, while Martin was tied for second before posting a 69 to move to the top of the board.
Sophomore Rickie Fowler came up shy in his attempt to repeat as medalist despite carding his second consecutive sub-70 round. The Murrieta, Calif., native came in with a 69 to finish tied for fifth place at 212. Fowler posted four birdies on his outward nine and stood at 3-under for the day before closing with back-to-back bogeys to finish at 1-under for the day.
Senior Trent Leon also posted a top-10 finish, tying for seventh place at 213. The Dallas, Texas native fired a 69 during his second round to stand in a tie for second through 36 holes before carding a 73 on Sunday to slip five spots and join three other players tied at 3-over par.
Freshman Peter Uihlein wrapped up his first career tournament with a 77 to finish at 10-over 220 and tied for 27th place.
Senior Jon McLean and sophomore Kevin Tway were among the group tied for 39th place at 224 after McLean closed with a 73, while Tway finished with a 78.
The Cowboys will be back in action on Sept. 28 when they travel to Toledo, Ohio to compete in the Ping/Golfweek Preview.
