In addition to Mahan, Azinger selected Chad Campbell, J.B. Holmes and Steve Stricker to round out the squad. The quartet joins eight players who automatically qualified through the Ryder Cup points list.
Mahan has competed in 24 PGA Tour events this season and has 10 top 25s to his credit. The Plano, Texas resident has also finished in the top 10 on four occasions with his best showing being a tie for second place at the Travelers Championship, where he recorded his first Tour victory last season.
The former Cowboy All-American opened the season in January with a fifth-place finish at the Mercedes-Benz Championship and also had top 10s at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, tying for sixth and 10th, respectively.
Mahan has amassed more than $1.8 million in earnings this season and currently stands 37th in the Official World Golf Ranking.
The selection marks the second consecutive year Mahan has represented the U.S. after being chosen last year by Jack Nicklaus to play in the Presidents Cup. In that event, he finished with a 2-3-0 mark.
Mahan is one of six players on the American squad who will be making their Ryder Cup debut.
The biennial event will be conducted Sept. 16-21 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.
