September 19, 2008 | Cowboy Golf
LOUISVILLE, Ky. Former Oklahoma State golfer Hunter Mahan is giving back to the university, earmarking a portion of his allotted Ryder Cup charity money for his alma mater.
On behalf of the American squad, the PGA of America will distribute $2.6 million to charities. The money is divided equally among the 12 players and team captain. Each player will contribute $100,000 to the charity of his choice, $90,000 to the college/university of their choice for Play Golf America University Programming, and $10,000 to the Folds of Honor Foundation, which supports scholarships for families of veterans who either perished or were wounded in the line of duty while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.
The biennial event is being contested this weekend in Louisville, Ky., at Valhalla Golf Club and pits the United States against a team comprised of players from Europe.
Competing in his first Ryder Cup, Mahan is splitting his $100,000 equally between the Alzheimer's Association and the Tee it up for the Troops organization. In addition, the Plano, Texas resident is contributing his $90,000 school allotment to OSU.
Mahan enjoyed a distinguished two-year career for the Cowboys, earning first-team All-America honors twice. He was also named the national player of the year in 2003.
