OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. Â Oklahoma State's men's golf team will open its fall season this weekend when it looks to defend its title at the third annual Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club.
The second-ranked Cowboys recorded the first of their three wins last year at the event, finishing with an 857 total and seven shots clear of the field.
The tournament also marked the first career victory for then-freshman Rickie Fowler. The Murrieta, Calif., native fired a 203 total that included a 63 during his second round to finish one shot ahead of Indiana's Jorge Campillo for medalist honors. Fowler's 7-under score during his second round matched the course record held by PGA Tour standout Vijay Singh.
Joining Fowler in the top 10 was fellow first-year player Kevin Tway, who finished sixth in the event with a 215 total.
OSU's lineup for this year's tournament will include a pair of seniors in Trent Leon and Jon McLean as well as Fowler and Tway. Making his Cowboy debut will be true freshman Peter Uihlein. The Bradenton, Fla., native arrived in Stillwater following a highly decorated career that included being named a two-time recipient of the AJGA Player of the Year award.
Fowler, the 2008 Ben Hogan Award winner, enters his sophomore season as the No. 1 ranked player in the country according to Golfweek and Golf World.
The Cowboys will begin play at 8 a.m. on Friday at the par-70, 7,157-yard layout and will be paired with Indiana and Duke. The 54-hole event will run Friday through Sunday with 18 holes being contested each day.
