Cowboy Baseball Opens Fall Practice
September 17, 2008 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â The Oklahoma State Cowboy baseball team began fall practice today at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The Cowboys' current roster includes 41 players, including 17 returning lettermen from last season's ballclub that climbed to as high as No. 5 in the national polls during the regular season. OSU finished the 2008 season with a 44-18 mark, its third-consecutive 40-win season, and was ranked as high as 17th in the final national polls.
OSU will be looking to replace four starters in 2009, including All-Big 12 performers at first base, shortstop and catcher. Among the notable returners for the Cowboys are sophomore Tom Belza, who led the Big 12 Conference in hitting last season with a .386 average, and junior Tyler Lyons, who was 12-2 with a 3.31 ERA and tossed four complete games.
Looking to join the mix for playing time in the spring are a group of players from the high school and junior college ranks in a recruiting class expected to rank among the best in the nation.
“Fall practice gives us a chance to get a good look at the new guys and see what they've got, and it allows those new guys to blend in with our returners,” said Anderson, who is entering his sixth season as OSU's head coach. “We're excited about the recruits we've brought in and anxious to see where we can plug them in to best help our team.”
The Cowboys will conduct 36 practices over the next 45 days and will conclude the fall with an inter-squad tournament.
