Cowgirls Set For Friends Invitational

The Basics
The Oklahoma State women's cross country team will compete in its second meet of the 2008 season Friday, as it travels to Wichita, Kan., for the Friends Invitational, hosted Friends University at Lake Afton Park. The women's five-kilometer race is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. The men's team competes again at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater on Oct. 4.
OSU Lineups
Running for the Cowgirls this week will be freshmen Heather Estetter, Kristen Gillespie, Kendra Woodson, Laura Heaton and Kaitlin Scepanski, sophomores Brittany Brewer and Kim Johnson, and senior Tihana Sarac. Coach Rene Sepulveda said he is running 400- and 800-meter athletes for training, rather than true distance runners.
Last Time Out
The Cowgirls and Cowboys both ran to third-place finishes at the Hurricane Festival on Aug. 30. Several freshmen ran for the Cowgirls, including Victoria Fratczak, Kristen Gillespie, Courtney Schultz, Brittani Johnson and Camille Schultz, who stayed in a group and had the top-five finishes for the Cowgirls. On the men's side, sophomore Ryan Lusk led the way for the Cowboys, finishing the four-mile course in 20:30.
Returning Stars
The Cowboys return All-Americans Ryan Vail and David Chirchir as well as all-Big 12 performers Vail, Chirchir, Matt Barnes-Smith and Sean Fleming from a team that placed third at the NCAA Championships last year. The women's team returns all-Big 12 and all-Midwest Region honoree Mihaela Susa and consistently solid performer Tone Hjalmarsen.

This will be the 9th-annual Friends Invitational. The Cowgirls had a strong showing last in the event last year, as they came away with a 1st-place team finish.
