Cowgirl Soccer Opens Preseason Practice
August 07, 2008 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. Â The Oklahoma State soccer team opened preseason practice Thursday, with 30 players reporting to head coach Colin Carmichael's Cowgirl squad.
The Cowgirls will have two-a-day practices for nine days before opening the 2008 season with an exhibition match against TCU on Aug. 16 in Stillwater. OSU opens the regular season Aug. 23 at SMU.
“We started (Thursday) morning with conditioning, and overall we looked to be in pretty good shape,” Carmichael said. “One of the biggest focuses for us over the next week or so is blending in our seven healthy newcomers with the returners and getting them up to speed on what we expect. Then we've got to get our returners into the competitive mode they were in last season.
“Usually during the preseason, we'll shape our defenses, and then after the first exhibition, we'll start concentrating on our attacking.”
OSU is coming off a 14-6-3 season in which they advanced to the second round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship for the second-consecutive season.
The '08 Cowgirls return nine starters from a year ago, including two-time All-America midfielder Yolanda Odenyo and their 2007 leading scorer, forward Kasey Langdon. Also returning are Siera Strawser, who led the team in goals last season, and goalkeeper Erin Stigler, who is the program's career leader in shutouts with 15.
“With nine returning starters and what we feel is a very good recruiting class, on paper, this is the deepest group of talent we've ever had here,” Carmichael said. “The talent is there so if we can stay healthy and get a little bit of luck, we have a chance to have a very successful season.”
