August 28, 2008 | Cowboy Golf
FAR HILLS, N.J. ÂOklahoma State sophomore Rickie Fowler was one of three players selected this week by the United States Golf Association to represent the U.S. this fall at the World Amateur Team Championship.
The biennial event will be played Oct. 16-19 at Royal Adelaide Golf Club and The Grange Golf Club West Course in Adelaide, Australia. This year, 72 teams will compete for the Eisenhower Trophy, which was last won by The Netherlands in 2006.
Fowler is coming off a solid summer that saw him tie for 60th at the U.S. Open and reach the round of 16 at the U.S. Amateur Championship. He also defended his title at the Sunnehanna Amateur and was the stroke play runner-up at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.
On the international level, the Murrieta, Calif., native represented the U.S. in June at the Palmer Cup and was a member of the victorious American squad at last year's Walker Cup.
Last season for the Cowboys, Fowler won twice and became the first-ever freshman to win the Ben Hogan Award. In addition, he was named a first-team All-American as well as the Big 12 Player of the Year.
Fowler will be joined on the American squad by Billy Horschel and Jamie Lovemark with USGA past president Walter Driver serving as team captain.
The WATC is conducted by the International Golf Federation and consists of four days of stroke play. A country may field a team of two or three players. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores by players from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day total is the team's score for the championship.
