STILLWATER, Okla. OSU freshmen Sean Einhaus and Morgan Hoffmann continued action in a pair of major amateur events on Friday. Einhaus completed the third round at the International European Amateur Championship, while Hoffmann took part in the quarterfinal round at the U.S. Amateur.
Hoffmann saw his run at the U.S. Amateur come to an end with a 4 and 3 loss to Danny Lee on Friday at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.
Despite a 1-over par stretch over the first six holes, Hoffmann found himself facing a 4-down deficit against Lee. The No. 1 player in the Golfweek/Scratch Players World Amateur Ranking, Lee birdied Nos. 2, 4 and 6 to take his commanding lead.
Hoffmann trimmed the deficit to three on four separate occasions, but could get no closer as Lee closed out the match with a par at the par-3 15th.
Einhaus entered the day in second place at the European Amateur, but dipped into a tie for 15th place after carding a 5-over 76 during his third round. A native of Germany, Einhaus opened with a 72 before firing a 4-under 67 during his second round to move up the leaderboard. Einhaus will begin tomorrow's final round six shots off the pace of tournament leader Paul Cutler.
