Morgan Hoffmann Advances To Quarterfinals At U.S. Amateur

PINEHURST, N.C. OSU freshman Morgan Hoffmann advanced to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Amateur with a pair of victories on Thursday at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.
Hoffmann was one of four OSU players in action during the second day of match play at the event.
Hoffmann pushed through to the round of eight with a 2 and 1 victory over Andrew Landry Thursday afternoon. Hoffmann won Nos. 7, 8 and 9 to make the turn with a 2-up lead and stretched it to a three-hole advantage on two occasions before closing out the match with a par on the 17th hole. He will face New Zealand's Danny Lee tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. (EST).
In second round action, Hoffmann and Wesley Bryan exchanged the lead on three occasions over the first 10 holes before Hoffmann won three consecutive holes to take the lead for good. The Saddle Brook, N.J., native won the 13th with a birdie before closing out the match with four consecutive pars to claim a 2 and 1 victory.
Sophomore Kevin Tway faced a three-hole deficit with four holes to play in his match with Derek Fathauer before winning Nos. 15, 16 and 17 to square the match. Both players carded pars at the 18th, making Tway the second Cowboy to send the Jensen Beach, Fla., native to extra holes on the day. After halving the first three extra holes, Fathauer clinched the victory with a birdie at the par-5 4th hole.
Tway advanced to the round of 16 with a 3 and 2 victory over stroke play medalist Robbie Fillmore on Thursday morning. The Edmond, Okla., native never trailed in the match, grabbing the lead on the first hole. Tway built a 3-up lead on five separate occasions with the last coming after he posted a match-clinching birdie at the 16th hole.
Rickie Fowler was eliminated during the third round, after suffering a 5 and 4 defeat to Adam Mitchell. The OSU sophomore birdie the first hole to take the early lead before Mitchell won six of the next seven holes to take command of the match heading to the back nine. Fowler won Nos. 10 and 11, but could get no closer.
Fowler moved into the afternoon session after knocking off Jake Koppenberg, 6 and 5. The Murrieta, Calif., native made four birdies on his front nine en route to claiming a 6-up lead at the turn. Fowler added a birdie at the par-4 11th before halving Nos. 13 and 14 to close out the match.
Freshman Peter Uihlein saw his run come to an end Thursday morning after taking Fathauer to extra holes. The Bradenton, Fla., native led by two with four holes remaining before Fathauer claimed Nos. 15 and 16 to even the match. The duo parred the first extra hole before Fathaeur advanced with a par on the 20th hole.

Cowboy freshman Sean Einhaus stands alone in second place at the International European Amateur Championship through two rounds. At the midway point, Einhaus is three shots off the lead after carding a 3-under 139 total that includes rounds of 72 and 67.
A pair of Cowboys sit atop the leaderboards at this week's PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour stops. Hunter Mahan holds a four-shot lead on the field at The Barclays, this week's PGA event in Paramus, N.J., after firing a 9-under 62. Fellow Cowboy Bo Van Pelt carded a 4-under 67 and is tied for third place.
On the Nationwide Tour, Chris Tidland carded a 7-under 63 during the first round of play at the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic in Moscow, Pa. Tidland will enter tomorrow's second round tied with Greg Chalmers for the top spot on the leaderboard.
