August 20, 2008 | Cowboy Golf
PINEHURST, N.C. Four members of the Oklahoma State men's golf team advanced to the second round of match play at the U.S. Amateur on Wednesday at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.
Sophomore Kevin Tway outlasted Philip Francis, 2-up, in his first-round match and will take on stroke play medalist Robbie Fillmore tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. (EST).
Wednesday's match was all square for seven of the first eight holes as Francis took the only lead during that stretch with a par on the third hole. Tway then answered with a birdie on the par-5 fourth to pull even. Francis reclaimed the lead after winning the ninth and 10th before Tway bounced back by claiming Nos. 12 and 13. The Edmond, Okla., native grabbed his first lead with a par on the 15th hole before closing out the victory by winning the 18th with a birdie.
Freshman Peter Uihlein knocked off teammate Trent Leon, 1-up to advance as well. The OSU rookie won the first hole against Leon and led for all but three holes during the match. Uihlein built a 2-up lead on two occasions, but the Cowboy senior fought back, squaring the match three separate times with the last coming at the 12th hole. With a par on the 17th, Leon drew within one before the duo halved the 18th to send Uihlein into the round of 32.
Freshman Morgan Hoffmann made a late rally in his match against Jason Millard to claim a 1-up victory and advance. The Saddle Brook, N.J., native led by two through eight holes, but lost four of the next six to trail by two with four holes remaining. Hoffmann pulled back even with pars on Nos. 15 and 16 before posting the deciding birdie at the par-3 17th.
Sophomore Rickie Fowler dropped two of the first four holes in his match against Isaiah Telles before winning three of his next four holes to make the turn with a 1-up lead. The Murrieta, Calif., native then won the first two holes on the back nine to take command of the match, posting a 4-and-2 victory. Fowler will take on Jake Koppenberg tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.
