Two Second-Half Goals Lift Cowgirls To Exhibition Win
August 17, 2008 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State netted a pair of goals in the second half to propel the 23rd-ranked Cowgirls to a 3-1 win over TCU in a preseason exhibition game Saturday night at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
Siera Strawser, Annika Niemeier and Kyndall Treadwell each had goals for the Cowgirls, who open the regular season next Saturday at SMU.
“It was a great scrimmage, and we accomplished what we wanted to,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “We won the game, we found three or four things we need to do better and we got a lot of people minutes that we needed to see.
“For us, it was mission accomplished. A lot of things we wanted to see tonight, we did.”
OSU took the match's first lead in the 29th minute when Strawser, the Cowgirls' leading goal scorer last season, took a pass from Yolanda Odenyo and found the back of the net from 15 yards out to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
The Horned Frogs tied the score 10 minutes later on an unassisted goal by Chelsea Cody, who delivered a shot from 25-yards out just past the reach of OSU goalkeeper Erin Stigler.
The score remained tied until early in the second half when Kasey Langdon sent a cross into the box. Niemeier ended up on the receiving end and drilled the ball past TCU goalie Kelsey Walters to put the Cowgirls on top.
OSU's final goal of the contest game from Treadwell as the freshman forward took a pass from Katie Richardson and found the back of the net to give the Cowgirls a two-goal cushion.
Treadwell, along with defender Melinda Mercado, was one of two true freshman starters for the Cowgirls. Three other freshmen  Krista Lopez, Sarah Brown and Colleen Dougherty - also contributed quality minutes off the bench.
“Melinda was very solid in the back and played the whole game,” Carmichael said. “Kyndall scored a great goal and almost had two. She's just full of energy, she's a great player and I thought she was fantastic.
“And we also had several other freshmen who got in and were solid who we feel like can contribute this year. We're happy with the group.”
Sophomore Kaitlyn Gustaves played the second half in goal for the Cowgirls and recorded a pair of saves.
