Cowboys Complete First Fall Scrimmage
August 10, 2008 | Cowboy Football
The Oklahoma State football team sat through a 53-minute weather delay, but still completed a lengthy scrimmage Saturday night in front of approximately 2,000 fans in Boone Pickens Stadium.
“Overall it was a good scrimmage,” head coach Mike Gundy said. “We didn't move fast enough on both sides of the ball. I'd like for the offense and defense to move and play a little faster, so we have to work through some things, but overall it was a good scrimmage  115 to 120 plays. We got in some good work.”
The Cowboys ran through various situational matchups before heading off the field just before 6 p.m. due to the threat of lightning. They returned to the field at 6:45 p.m. to complete the workout.
“It's (the weather) a little bit of a distraction,” Gundy said. “I felt bad for the fans. We had a nice crowd and they had to make a decision on whether to leave or not. Obviously we were waiting on the lightning and quite a few of them had to head out.
“For the players, they go back out stretch and play. They actually played better after the rain delay than I thought they would,” he added. “Traditionally it's not very good when you have to come inside for 45 minutes and head back out.”
A couple of OSU headliners, quarterback Zac Robinson and tight end Brandon Pettigrew, sat out the scrimmage.
“There was no reason for them to be out there,” Gundy said.
With Robinson observing, quarterbacks Brandon Weeden and Alex Cate both directed scoring drives with Weeden scoring on a run and Cate finding newcomer Bo Bowling on a 25-yard TD pass. Dez Bryant also had a short TD reception from Weeden and freshman Kye Staley added a short touchdown run.
The Cowboy defense got into the act with a safety from senior defensive tackle Jeray Chatham, and an interception return for a score by cornerback Jacob Lacey.
The Cowboys will take their first break from camp with an off-day scheduled for Sunday.
