The Cowboys were dressed in shorts, shirts and helmets for the first workout.
“It was a good first day,” said fourth-year head coach Mike Gundy. “Everyone was doing a good job of getting from drill to drill with their hustle and intensity, which is normal for a first day.
The head coach cited the play of backup quarterbacks Brandon Weeden and Alex Cate for their performance in the Cowboys' first workout. He also was impressed with the return of running back Keith Toston from injury, and with Toston's backfield mate, sophomore Kendall Hunter.
On the defensive side of the ball, Gundy singled out junior-college transfers Swanson Miller (tackle), Donald Booker (linebacker) and Lucien Antoine (safety) for their efforts. Overall, Gundy gave his team a passing game with a slight disclaimer.
“We need to do a better job on offense and defense of pushing the envelope and really moving fast,” he said. “We want to play fast-paced and defensively we want to be sitting there waiting on the offense. We have to learn to play faster. We feel like the new clock rules can give us an advantage.”
The Cowboys will practice again Friday night and then Saturday morning prior to Media Day and Fan Day.
