July 09, 2008 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER, Okla.ÂFormer Oklahoma State quarterback Bob Cutburth passed away last week after a nine-year battle with brain cancer.
Cutburth competed for the Cowboys for three seasons, leading OSU to a 5-5 mark in 1969 in its first season under the direction of head coach Floyd Gass.
A sixth-round draft pick by the Chicago Bears in the 1970 NFL Draft, Cutburth also spent time as a coach at OSU and SMU.
Nearly 40 years removed from his college career, Cutburth's name is still prominently featured among the school's all-time leaders in several categories.
He is tied with Earl Wheeler for the longest pass play in school history, connecting on an 85-yard pass to Hermann Eben against Kansas State in 1969. The play was part of OSU's 28-19 upset over the No. 15 Wildcats. He also had a 70-yard pass play that same season against Kansas that is tied for 20th on the school's all-time list.
During his career, Cutburth compiled 1,993 passing yards and currently ranks 16th on the school's all-time chart. He also appears among OSU's all-time total offense leaders. In addition to his 1,993 yards through the air, he ran for 294 yards to rank 26th with 2,287 total yards and his 19 career touchdown passes are tied for the ninth-best total by a Cowboy.
Cutburth's 1,593 passing yards in 1969 ranks as the 12th-best season total in school history. His 1,754 total yards that same year rank 16th and his 16 touchdown passes are tied for sixth on the single-season chart.
