Cowboy Duo Advances At U.S. Public Links Championship

AURORA, Colo. ÂTwo members of the Oklahoma State men's golf team began the first round of match play at the 83rd United States Amateur Public Links Championship with victories on Wednesday at Murphy Creek Golf Club.
Sophomore-to-be Rickie Fowler knocked off Michael Knott of Buffalo, N.Y., 4 and 2, during his first round match, while senior-to-be Jon McLean tallied a 3 and 1 victory over Rod Butler of Carson City, Nev. to move into the round of 32.
Fowler entered match play as the No. 2 seed in the 64-player bracket after firing rounds of 67 and 66 to finish one shot behind Aaron Goldberg for medalist honors. McLean tied for seventh place during stroke play with a pair of 69s.
In his match against Knott, Fowler won four of the first five holes to take control. After making the turn 4-up, the Murrieta, Calif., native won the 13th hole to increase his lead to five with five to play. Knott won both the 14th and 15th before Fowler birdied the par-4 16th to wrap up the victory.
Fowler will take on Cody Paladino tomorrow morning with the winner advancing to the round of 16 in the afternoon.
McLean never trailed in his match, taking his first lead on the third hole. After Butler squared the match three holes later, the duo halved the next five holes. The Weston, Fla., native won the 12th before Butler squared the match on the next hole. However, McLean won three of the next four holes, including birdies on Nos. 15 and 16, to advance.
McLean will take on David Johnson tomorrow morning.
