Rickie Fowler Collects A Pair Of Postseason Honors
June 03, 2008 | Cowboy Golf
Oklahoma State's Rickie Fowler has been named a PING First-Team All-American as well as the recipient of the Phil Mickelson Award it was announced today by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
“We had a bunch of young guys this year and it was nice to be able to come out and help lead our team,” Fowler said. “To be on the first team was what I was shooting for and I am happy I achieved that goal. Hopefully, we can keep it going into next season.”
Fowler became the 51st Cowboy to earn first-team honors and the first OSU freshman to receive the distinction since Jonathan Moore in 2006.
Fowler is also the third Cowboy in the last four years to receive the Mickelson Award, joining Pablo Martin (2005) and Moore (2006). The award is presented annually by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation to the most outstanding freshman in Division I golf.
“It is awesome to win an award that is named after him (Mickelson),” Fowler said. “I haven't met him yet, but I obviously know all about him and everything he has accomplished.”
The Murrieta, Calif., native won twice during his rookie season, claiming medalist honors in just his second collegiate start at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational. In the event, Fowler matched the course record held by Vijay Singh with a 63 during his second round and helped the Cowboys to the first of their three tournament titles in the process.
Fowler earned his first victory of the spring in April with a four-shot win over teammate Kevin Tway at the Big 12 Championship. A two-time selection as the Big 12 Golfer of the Month, he was also named the league's player and newcomer of the year.
Last month, Fowler was the first-ever freshman to receive the Ben Hogan Award, which is presented annually to the top men's NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or junior college golfer taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during the last 12 months.
In 12 events this season, Fowler compiled a team-low 71.11 stroke average as well as a team-high 10 rounds in the 60s. He opened his freshman campaign with nine consecutive top-10 finishes, including a pair of runner-up showings. Fowler closed out the campaign with a fourth-place tie last week at the NCAA Championship in West Lafayette, Ind.
One of 10 players selected to the All-America first team, Fowler was joined by Jonas Blixt of Florida State, Indiana's Jorge Campillo, Kevin Chappell of UCLA, Rory Hie and Jamie Lovemark of Southern California, Stanford's Sihwan Kim, Webb Simpson of Wake Forest, Georgia State's Joel Sjoholm and Michael Thompson of Alabama.
He was also joined on the All-Freshmen team by Harris English and Russell Henley of Georgia, Stanford's Sihwan Kim and Kevin O'Connell of North Carolina.
