Kevin Tway, a freshman on the Oklahoma State men's golf team, will compete in the 2008 U.S. Open after advancing through sectional qualifying in Columbus, Ohio on Monday.
Tway fired consecutive 68s for a 136 total to finish seventh and qualify for the event, which will be played June 12-15 at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. The sectional field consisted of 116 players vying for 23 spots. Overall, there were 14 total sectional qualifiers played.
Tway, who claimed the 2005 U.S. Junior Amateur title, is coming off a freshman campaign that saw him earn his first career victory at the NCAA Central Regional and post a pair of runner-up finishes as well.
The Open will be the first for Tway, who is the son of former Cowboy All-American and 18-time U.S. Open participant, Bob Tway. With his berth, he becomes the first Cowboy to compete in the U.S. Open while still in college since Jonathan Moore and Ryan Posey where in the field at the 2006 tournament at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y.
The Columbus site also produced a pair of alternates for the Open, both of which have OSU ties. Moore posted a 139 total that included rounds of 67 and 72, while OSU freshman Rickie Fowler lost in a three-way playoff for two spots on Tuesday morning. Fowler also carded a 139 with rounds of 66 and 73.
Monday's playoff began with 11 players battling for seven spots and dwindled to the trio of players that included Fowler, playing for the final two entries before play was suspended due to darkness. The final two spots were determined Tuesday morning with Eric Axley and Jonathan Mills advancing.
Joining Fowler and Moore at 139 was former Cowboy Bo Van Pelt as well.
