Post-Game Quotes
Oklahoma State coach Frank Anderson
Opening Statement:
“Matt was a big key for us to go out there and get some innings, and we needed him to go deep into the game. He did a good job and we knew TCU would make a run. That's a good club. They made a run and it got kind of sideways with us with Jordy and obviously he got the big knock late. That kid that came in for them is going to be a high draft pick. He's really good. All you have to do is look at his numbers, and the way we scored on him was very uncharacteristic because he's really good.”
On Jordy Mercer's performance today:
“He's a competitive kid and that's what makes him a great player because our game is a game of negatives. You play long enough and you are going to have some things that don't go very well for you. You have to be mentally strong enough to handle them. To separate what happened on the mound and to come back and hit a home run to win the game was a huge mental change. That is a huge mental change to go from one of the lowest lows to go back and turn that thing around. It's a huge hit when you think of all the emotional things that go into that. It makes it pretty special.”
Jordy Mercer
On the last few innings:
“I can't describe it. It's still processing for sure. I just wanted to get on base. I just wanted to do something to get this team going. I got a pitch up, and I guess it speaks for itself.”
On the ups and downs of pitching and batting:
“When I came into pitch, we had a lead and I just wanted to throw strikes and let them get themselves out. Unfortunately, it didn't work out for me. I thought I made good pitches, but they put good swings on them. When I came in in the bottom of the ninth, I just wanted to get something going for the team. Fortunately, I did.”
On being one of the biggest hits of his life:
“This one ranks up there for sure. This one was emotional because it was good for the team. To get to this game, it was a big key for us.”
On playing again tonight:
“Right now, we just need a little rest. I think we can carry the momentum over. Like coach has been saying these last couple days to just keep grinding and good things will happen. We just have to lay it all on the line tonight.”
Matt Gardner
On rhythm to start the game:
“I'm not sure there was a rhythm. They were just swinging and getting themselves out. Luis (Flores) did a great job behind the plate calling the game. I actually threw more than one pitch other than just fastballs tonight. When you add a couple other pitches, you're bound to get some more out.”
