Cowboys' Season Comes To An End Against Wichita State
June 02, 2008 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's season came to an end Sunday night at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium as the top-seeded Cowboys dropped an 11-7 contest to Wichita State in 10 innings at the NCAA Stillwater Regional.
OSU led 7-5 going into the top of the ninth inning, but the Shockers tied the score and then won the game thanks to a grand slam from Clinton McKeever in the top of the 10th frame.
The No. 5 Cowboys end their season with a 44-18 mark, their best ever in five seasons under head coach Frank Anderson. WSU advances to Super Regional play with a 47-15 record.
OSU led 7-5 after a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh resulting from back-to-back home runs by Jordy Mercer and Matt Hague. After Donnie Webb walked to lead off the inning, Mercer blasted his 14th homer of the season over the wall in left field, and Hague followed with his 12th round tripper of the year.
The Cowboys held that lead until the ninth. Pinch hitter Kenny Williams Jr. doubled off OSU reliever Robbie Weinhardt to lead off the inning and scored on an Andy Dirks' single. After Dirks advanced to second on a groundout and Conor Gillaspie walked, McKeever singled up the middle to bring home Dirks with the tying run.
OSU got the tying run on in the bottom of the ninth but failed to score.
In the 10th, OSU's Brett Davis surrendered a leadoff walk to Tyler Hill, and then Hague was brought in to pitch and promptly walked Williams. Following a sacrifice bunt, the Cowboys intentionally walked Gillaspie to bring McKeever to the plate. And the Shockers' designated hitter delivered, hitting an opposite-field grand slam off the foul pole in right field to provide what proved to be the game-winning runs.
Davis suffered the loss for OSU to fall to 2-2 on the season, while Logan Hoch picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief to improve to 2-1.
Hague led OSU with a 3-for-4 night and was one of three Cowboys with two RBIs in the contest. Mercer and Rebel Ridling also drove in two runs apiece for the Pokes.
In just his third pitching appearance of the season, Luis Flores started on the mound for OSU and worked five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out four.
OSU had five players named to the NCAA Stillwater Regional All-Tournament team: Flores (catcher), Tom Belza (2B), Mercer (SS), Neil Medchill (OF), and Tyler Lyons (P).
