Three Cowboys Make Cut At U.S. Open

Three of the six players with Oklahoma State ties in the U.S. Open field made the 36-hole cut on Friday at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego.
Leading the OSU contingent was Scott Verplank, who carded his second consecutive 72 on Friday to stand at 144, 2-over, and is tied for 16th place. The former Cowboy All-American will enter the weekend five shots off the pace of tournament leader Stuart Appleby.
Hunter Mahan, the 2003 national player of the year while at OSU, followed an opening 72 with a 74 to come in tied for 35th place at 146.
Sophomore-to-be Rickie Fowler carded an 8-over 79 to get in at 7-over 149 and make the cut on the number. The Murrieta, Calif., native, who was one of just 11 players on Thursday to break par on Thursday with a 1-under 70, will start play on Saturday tied for 65th place.
Casey Wittenberg posted a 78 during his second round to miss the cut by one shot with a 150 total.
Charles Howell III, the 2000 NCAA champion, and current Cowboy Kevin Tway finished among the group tied for 107th place at 11-over after each posted a 78 on Friday.
