June 16, 2008 | Cowboy Golf
The 2003 national player of the year, Mahan was one of just four players to break 70 during Saturday's third round, firing a 2-under 69 to move into a tie for sixth place. The McKinney, Texas, native will begin tomorrow's final round five shots behind tournament leader Tiger Woods.
Mahan birdied his second hole and made the turn at even par before getting to 2-under par with birdies on Nos. 10 and 13. After a bogey at the 16th, Mahan put his fourth birdie of the day on the board at the par-5 closing hole to get to his 69. Through 54 holes, he has a 2-over 215 total.
Former Cowboy Scott Verplank overcame a stretch that saw him bogey five of his first eight holes to finish with a 74. Verplank moved back to 3-over after carding birdies on three of his final five holes and will begin Sunday's round tied for 19th place at 218.
OSU sophomore-to-be Rickie Fowler finished the day tied for 70th place at 225 after turning in a 76 during his third round.
One of three amateurs to make the cut, Fowler stood at 1-under through three holes after a birdie at the par-4 second hole before enduring a stretch of four bogeys in five holes. The Murrieta, Calif., native then saw his impressive streak of 46 consecutive holes without posting a number higher than a bogey come to an end with a double bogey on the par-3 11th hole. Fowler did rebound by playing his next five holes 1-under par before closing with a pair of bogeys.
