May 08, 2008 | Cowboy Baseball
DURHAM, N.C. Â Oklahoma State sophomore pitcher Andrew Oliver has accepted an invitation to the 2008 USA Baseball National Team Trials, it was announced today by USA Baseball.
Oliver is one of 12 collegiate players thus far who have accepted invitations to the trials, which will be held June 11-23. In all, 32 players will be invited to the trials, with 22 of those players being selected for the National Team roster.
“USA Baseball is excited about the return of the trials period,” said National Team General Manager Eric Campbell. “Last year, we had to select the National Team by June 11 and without the aid of a trials period for the first time ever.
“This is a strong initial group of invitees, and we will continue to work with collegiate coaches to get the best 32 players available into this year's National Team Trials.”
Oliver is having an impressive season for the Cowboys in 2008. The left hander is 5-2 with a 2.10 ERA in 12 appearances, and he leads OSU with 71 strikeouts in 77 innings of work.
A native of Vermilion, Ohio, Oliver has allowed two or fewer earned runs in 10 of his 11 starts this season, and opponents are hitting just .188 against him.
Oliver will be vying to become the ninth OSU player to earn a spot on a Team USA roster. Oliver's current Cowboy teammate, shortstop Jordy Mercer, was a member of the club in 2007.
Former OSU star and current Oral Roberts head coach Rob Walton will be the '08 USA Baseball National Team head coach.
