STILLWATER, Okla. Â Utah Valley snapped Oklahoma State's 12-game winning streak with an 11-3 victory over the Cowboys Sunday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The loss ended OSU's longest winning streak in 10 years as the No. 9 Cowboys fell to 35-12 on the season. The setback was also just the third time in 26 games this season that OSU has lost at home.
Bryan Smith tossed a complete game for Utah Valley, which improved to 13-31-1 on the season. A right hander, Smith threw 153 pitches in the win and struck out 11 to improve to 2-4.
OSU fell behind 2-0 in the first inning as the Wolverines scored a pair of unearned runs off Cowboy starter Tyler Blandford.
The Cowboys tied the score in the second. Dean Green led off the inning with a single and was followed by Donnie Webb, who doubled. After Rebel Ridling struck out, Luis Flores delivered a two-RBI single to even the score.
But UVU regained the lead with a four-run rally in the fourth as the Wolverines batted around and collected six hits.
Adam Openshaw jump started the big inning with a leadoff home run to right field, and the Wolverines added runs on RBI singles from Kevin Arendse, Tyler Garretson and Ryan Jones.
OSU's final run came in the sixth when Ridling doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI groundout by Tom Belza to make the score 6-3.
The Wolverines answered with a pair of runs in the seventh and three more in the ninth to seal the win.
Blandford, one of six OSU pitchers on the day, suffered the loss to fall to 3-4. The sophomore righty allowed five runs on four hits in three innings of work.
Jordy Mercer was the lone Cowboy with more than one hit as he finished 2-for-5 at the plate, while Matt Hague was 1-for-4 to extend his season-long hitting streak to 11 games.
OSU returns to action Wednesday when they travel to Houston to take on No. 5 Rice at 6:30 p.m.
