Oklahoma State Selected To Host NCAA Baseball Regional
May 25, 2008 | Cowboy Baseball
INDIANAPOLIS Â Oklahoma State's Allie P. Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater, Okla., has been chosen as one of 16 regional tournament host sites for the 2008 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, it was announced today.
The 2008 Stillwater Regional will mark the first time OSU has hosted since 1997. The Cowboys have hosted nine previous regional tournaments at Reynolds Stadium, and OSU is now one of just six schools to host 10 or more times since the NCAA went to the regional format in 1975.
“Getting to host is an exciting opportunity for us and really rewards the kids for what they accomplished throughout the season,” said OSU head coach Frank Anderson. “After going on the road for the last couple of years, it's nice to be at home and have that fan support.”
Reynolds Stadium opened in 1981 and has played host to 80 NCAA Regional games. The 4,000-seat stadium has averaged 2,784 fans in those games.
Of the nine regionals OSU has hosted, the Cowboys have won six and finished second in the other three. The last regional championship OSU won on its home field came in 1993.
OSU is 42-16 on the season and ranked No. 6 nationally. The Cowboys are 26-4 on their home field this season and own a 719-148 (.829) mark in 26-plus seasons at Reynolds Stadium.
OSU is one of three Big 12 Conference teams chosen as regional hosts, along with Texas A&M and Nebraska.
The 64 teams in the 2008 NCAA Baseball Championship field will be announced Monday at 11:30 a.m. (CST) on ESPN.
Oklahoma State player quotes on OSU hosting a regional
Junior shortstop Jordy Mercer
“It's a great honor, and it feels good that all our hard work has paid off,” Mercer said. “We're excited to bring a regional back to Stillwater for our fans, and it's going to be exciting to play in front of all that orange.”
Senior pitcher Robbie Weinhardt
“I think we really deserved to host after everything we've gone through and done this season, with the way we played in the Big 12 and what we did against ranked teams,” Weinhardt said. “It's really going to be something big to pack Allie P. with our great fan base, and hopefully we can do well in front of our home crowd.”
