May 18, 2008 | Cowboy Golf
Oklahoma State's men's golf team carded a 297 during its final round at the NCAA Central Regional on Saturday to climb into second place at Ohio State's Scarlet Course.
With its runner-up showing, the Cowboys extended their record string of NCAA Championship berths to 62-straight seasons. OSU finished with a 37-over total of 889 to come in 10 shots behind tournament champion Wake Forest.
“It was very good to see the team handle the pressure of qualifying as well as the tough conditions out there today,” OSU head coach Mike McGraw said.
The Cowboys entered the final 18 holes tied for sixth place, but fired the low round of the day, coming in as the only team among the 27 in the field to break 300. Florida and Louisville carded the second-best totals on the day with each squad posting a 300 at the par-71, 7,420-yard layout.
In addition to moving on to the NCAA Championship the Cowboys produced the regional medalist in freshman Kevin Tway.
“Kevin had a pair of runner-ups this season and has been playing well,” McGraw said. “It was nice to see him go out and know he could win and do it against a quality field.”
With the victory, Tway became the third different OSU player to win a tournament this season, joining junior Trent Leon and fellow freshman Rickie Fowler. The win also marked the sixth time a Cowboy has emerged as the regional champion.
The Edmond, Okla., native entered the final day at 3-under after firing rounds of 70 and 69 before closing with a 75. Tway's 1-over 214 total put him one shot clear of Wake Forest's Brendan Gielow and Penn State's Robert Rohanna.
Leon cracked the top five as well, closing out the event with a 72 to finish at 217, while Fowler carded his low round of the tournament with a 73 to move into a tie for 20th place at 224.
Freshman Mark Johnson posted his second consecutive 79, tying him for 115th place at 236.
Sophomore Trent Whitekiller rounded out the starting five with a 77 to finish at 239 and tied for 125th.
The NCAA Championship will take place May 28-31 at Purdue's Kampen Course.
