Cowboy Golf Returns To Action At NCAA Central Regional
Oklahoma State's men's golf team will be in search of an unprecedented 62nd-straight NCAA Championship appearance this week when it begins play at the NCAA Central Regional on Thursday. OSU is in the midst of a two-tournament winning streak after victories at the Big 12 Championship and The Maxwell. Currently ranked fifth in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, OSU will be the No. 2 seed in this year's field behind top-ranked Alabama. The top 10 teams and two individuals on non-qualifying teams from the 27-team field will advance to the NCAA Championship, which will be held May 28-31 at Purdue's Kampen Course. The Cowboys will begin their first round on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. (EST) at the par-71, 7,455-yard layout on the No. 1 tee. Friday's round will begin at 7 a.m. for the Cowboys on the 10th tee. For Saturday's final round, tee times will be based on the 36-hole standings.
OSU At The Central Regional
OSU has captured six titles and produced five individual medalists at the regional tournament since the inception of the current qualifying format in 1989. The program's victories came in 1989, 1990, 1997, 2002, 2003 and 2006. OSU is one of just six schools to compete in every NCAA Regional, joining Arizona State, Clemson, North Carolina, UNLV and USC.
Last Time At Scarlet Course
Oklahoma State has enjoyed considerable success at the Scarlet Course through the years, claiming three of their 10 national titles on the Dr. Alister McKenzie design. The Cowboys won NCAA crowns at the Scarlet Course in 1980, 1987 and 1995. OSU's 1995 title came in historic fashion as the Cowboys defeated Stanford on the 73rd hole, marking the first playoff in NCAA Championship history. OSU's most recent visit to Ohio State's Scarlet Course came in 2002 for the NCAA Championship. In that event, the Cowboys finished with a 1,154 total and in 16th place. OSU did get a pair of top-10 individual finishes in the event, as Hunter Mahan finished third, while Pär Nilsson tied for eighth place.
Regional Rewind ... 2007 NCAA Central Regional
Oklahoma State's men's golf team extended its record string of NCAA Championship appearances to 61 consecutive berths after finishing in sixth place at the NCAA Central Regional at Rich Harvest Farms. OSU moved on by posting the low round of the day among the 27 participating teams with its second consecutive 12-over 300. The Cowboys finished with a 54-hole total of 906 to come in two strokes behind fifth-place Tennessee. Senior Tyler Leon came in as the Cowboys' top finisher, tying for ninth place with a 7-over 223 total. Senior Ryan Posey finished tied for 28th place at 11-over 227. Sophomore Trent Leon led OSU's final-round charge, posting a team-best 72 on the day and moving from a tie for 89th place into a tie for 44th at 230. Sophomore Jonathan Moore put together a 231 total to tie for 50th place. Junior Pablo Martin turned in an 84 on Saturday to finish tied for 105th at 241.
