May 12, 2008 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER, Okla. Â For the fifth consecutive year, Oklahoma State wrestling was recognized as a National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic team. The 2007-08 Cowboys compiled a team grade point average of 2.904 and placed three individuals on the All-Academic team in Brandon Mason (biology/pre-med), Newly McSpadden (applied sociology) and Nathan Morgan (civil engineering). All three Cowboys sport GPAs above 3.30.
Both Mason and Morgan were recognized with the award for the third time in their respective careers, with McSpadden earning his second honor. Oklahoma State was one of only 11 schools with three or more all-academic selections.
Including this year's honorees, Oklahoma State has seen 41 wrestlers honored for academic excellence by the NWCA since 1991 and 24 of its wrestlers honored by the NWCA since 2000, a figure that ranks second in the nation during that time.
An All-American on the mat, Morgan finished his career not only by winning the NWCA's Academic Award this year, but was also recognized as OSU's Male Student-Athlete of the Year for his combination of success in the classroom and in athletic competition.
For teams to be eligible for consideration for the title of NWCA All-Academic team, teams comprise 12 student athletes, including the 10 wrestlers that were the entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. If teams had less than 10 entries for their respective qualifier, they may fill those spots with wrestlers that competed in at least one varsity dual during the season.
Individually, wrestlers must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule  and must have competed in at least 60 percent of said schedule. The other way to qualify for the All-Academic team is have a 3.0 cumulative and been an NCAA All-American.
